Angry Fire Dell 2400 locking up.....

i just reloaded a dell 2400 series computer (spec,s)
windows xp
intel celeron
30 gig hdd

the problem is when i get online with earthlink(dial up) it locks up
and have to power down then reboot,
the other problem is in device manager, other devices, theres a yellow ! saying
the SMB bus controller is not installed or working.
also are there any issues with earthlink that i am missing?
seems the puter works fine till i get online cant signe off, and sometimes a box appears saying the puter encountered a plroblem i will be shutting down in 30 sec,s i checked for any conflic,s with kboard, mouse and modem but didnt find any
should i reload the windows again? what are my options?
thanks

Did you reinstall the chipset drivers from the Dell cd's and or Dell's web site?

The SMBus controller is taken care of with the installation of the Intel Chipset Identification Utility.

The lockups may be the cheap winmodem that's in there. You need good drivers for it.

A box saying that your computer will shut down in 30 seconds? What else does the error say?

As I said, you need to install the Intel Chipset Identification Utility to get the SMBus driver installed.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R47822.EXE

At this point, I would just reload - and do NOT connect the machine to the Internet till you get SP2 installed, the firewall turned on, and an antivirus installed.

If you have a way to get broadband access and have a CD burner, just download the network install of SP2 from M$ - it's 270 megs.

And you can get a disk with SP2 sent free from microsoft.
Says allow 4-6 weeks, but that was when they first posted it, currently they seem to get them out in a day or two plus mail transit time.

i just finished reloading that Dell tonight, did a clean reinstall everything all went well w/ no issues in the device manager this time around, one question though ive reformatted a few puters and never seen this one before this is a new one to me, when i reformatted windows using the Dell windows XP home disc, everything that was previous installed was gone like it,s supposed to be, now when i went into my computer where all the drives are listed everything there was fine but when i went into program files i found programs in there that were from the previous install, stuff that i had put in myself none of these programs were listed on the all programs menue, add and remove, and there were no desk top icons for any of them, what i dont get is when i reloaded windows i followed through all the prompts deleted and did a fresh install of of XP has anyone ever encountered this before?
weird, thanks for the help
