What is the real story behind Windows ME?
A friend of mine has Windows ME on her computer, and finds she has alot of grief with it, mainly with getting the occassional "Blue" screen, amongst other issues of not being able to download certain applications etc.
Is Win ME as bad as most make it out to be? Is Win XP THAT much better? If so, why? She is on a budget, so buying XP outright is difficult, so puts up with all the realities and grief that Win ME gives her, so I thought I would ask you folks "if" Win ME really should be eliminated and change to XP? Thanks in advance for comments/advice/thoughts. Dale

Personaly I like ME I still have a few customers using it and as long as you don't push it too hard it is OK, the only problem you have now is no security support for it anymore it stopped a few days ago.
Before considering putting XP on her machine put an XP CD into her machine and use the hardware compatibility wizard that pops up on the GUI, if you don't have an XP CD then post back here with the specifications of her machine and maybe we can tell you if XP will run on it.

I too liked ME over 98....
Upgrading to XP is probably a bad idea till you get her current situation(s) cleared up.

I personally think ME was a step backwards from 98SE. Sure, it had some new features like the Win2000 driver model and system restore, but it just didn't work too well on what is a 16 bit OS.

Me was junk as far as I am concerned. It was a huge step backwards. As glc mentioned, a couple of added features may have pleased some... but the price you paid for complete and utter system instability wasn't worth it... not to mention having to reboot everytime you changed anything (network settings, added new hardware, etc).

Well, you had to reboot 98 all the time for that too, that was not a step backwards at all for ME.

If you can find a copy of 2k, that might be the way to go. I doubt the system requirements are much higher if at all from ME and it is far more stable.
