XP System Restore ????

Hi folks, I am running XP home w/all updates except 1 that won't install & 1 I don't understand.

Since June 29, 2006 my System Restore makes a daily addition, " Software Distribution 2.0" Before that it was a periodic entry. I have my System restore set for 5% (1678 MB) & it has been there for several months now.

My machine seems slightly erratic now & I wonder if I have too much info in the system restore?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. RevCLB

Software Distribution 2.0 is the Windows Update Service running, it makes a restore point everytime it runs just in case the windows update crashes your system. Do you have the Windows Update service incessantly bugging you to do a particular update?? this might be causing your problem.

What about defrags and disk cleanup?
Do you use the disk cleanup option in system tools?
If you click on disk cleanup it will take a moment or two to run a scan on your harddrive, when the next window opens you have the option to clean up some non necessary files and another options tab, if you click the other options tab you then get a system restore tab and clicking this will delete all but the last restore point.
If you have not cleaned your harddrive in a while using these tools and defrag can tidy up your harddrive a lot, after this we can look into what the update problem is.

Yes, KB913670. I have tried to install this but it has failed 15 times & I don't know how to install or get around it. It stays on my toolbar constantly. Any help?

Yes I do use the disk cleanup option. Some of my post didn't get through. I have DiskeeperPro which I run frequently. It has an automatic setting "Set & Forget: but I custom defrag at least 3 times a week.I have EwidoPro, Which I run everyday. I have Registry Mechanic, which I run frequently.

Have a read of this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913670/en-us and consider blocking that update on the windows update site.

By the way, it's CCleaner that did you in here - it deleted the uninstaller for KB912475. All 913670 does is uninstall 912475 - if the uninstaller is missing it fails.

Hi folks, just in case anyone is interested. I tried to understand what you folks told me but it didn't work. I went to Windows update Help & asked. Got quick response but didn't understand their directions. Asked my daughter to help but she got detained.

While waiting, decided to do full malware scan in safe mode & download latest Windows updates. One, or the other, got rid of the problem. The nag icon is gone. System restore is back to normal. Computer is running ok again.

Update KB913670 never got installed. My apologies to Jagg but it was to update Australian daylight savings time. This doesn't really affect me.

Thanks to all of you who tried to help me. It's not your fault I am so computer iliterate!

Thanks again, RevCLB

Rev, don't worry about having too much info in system restore, when it reaches the size limit you set it deletes the oldest restore points to make room for the new ones.
So it won't really affect performance unless your hard drive is getting pretty full.
That said, there isn't anything wrong with clearing it out once in a while to free up disk space.
