OK, I decided to do a repair reinstall with XP pro since no one could give me feedback in my previous post and I need my system back soon.
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=162830 Now I have another issue!!! In the middle of the repair install, during the installation of devices, I get windows installer box stating the following "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" What it is trying to install and asking me to search for is Sunbelt CounterSpy.msi installation package. When I try to cancel this it takes about 4-5 cancellation attempts and then moves on finishing the device installation. Then setup installs the network and starts configuration process when the windows installer window asks me to try again with the same message for counterspy. When I cancel out again it just stalls the setup process. I reboot and the same process happens all over again. What it this all about?? I do have counterspy installed, but why is trying to install as a device? All I want to do is fix the boot problem I have and wind up with larger issues. Can anyone help? Please!! |

You may have inadvertently backed yourself into a corner.
If the boot record on that drive can't be repaired by the recovery console a repair install isn't going to do the job either. Open the case, with the power off and disconnected. If the drives are SATA switch the formatted drive to connector 1 and the former boot drive to connector 2. Reinstall XP on the formatted drive and use it to pull what data you need off the former boot drive which you will format when you're done. If the drives are IDE it's trickier. Pull both drives. Look at the back, I'm assuming they both jumpered Cable Select (CS) which means the formatted drive can switch places with the former boot drive on the ribbon cable. If the drives are jumpered master(m) and slave(s) you will have to switch the jumpers to CS before you change their position on the cable. Proceed with XP install. Please do not open new threads on the same topic it just makes it harder for us to help you and keep track. Also, sometimes you do have to wait.

So that means optical drive first in boot order and he installs to a correctly connected (and jumpered, if necessary) hard drive. |

Thanks everyone, I did not need to do what pam123 suggested. I finally got the install to go and was able to boot just fine. I figured out why it was looking for the CounterSpy.msi file, which is part of a new issue.
The CounterSpy.msi installation package is located in "C:/download installation” directory and is needed to start counterspy at boot up. Here’s my new problem. During the repair install, setup somehow designated my boot partition as the E drive. Funny part about this the same install was originally the C drive and at the time of reinstall all other drives were disconnected. How do I rename the boot drive back to a C? Is that possible? The installer is still looking for CounterSpy.msi installation package in the C directory and I can not do a full system load until this is corrected. Thanks |
