Lost XP volume control
Lost volume control on my task bar. I went to Microsoft forum and someone said to go to Windows\system32 and click on some volume file and actively install it but that didn't work. And I swear I had a volume control in my Start->Accesssories but that's gone, too. Anyone had any ideas? I don't have an XP Pro CD.

That happened on my daughters computer a while back. She had a HP computer. I went to the HP website and downloaded the correct driver. That put the icon back in the system tray and fixed the sound. Can't remember how I knew which driver to download but that will probably be obvious when you go the the computer's manufacture website.

In case you haven't already checked this--go to START / Settings / Control panel / Sounds and Audio devices / Volume tab, and make sure there is a check mark in (Place volume icon on task bar)

First place I would look is in the Device Manager and make sure the Sound card isn't showing any yellow or red marks. Possibly the driver needs to be reinstalled. Without a driver, the sound icon will not be displayed.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago.
Believe it or not I simply copied the file sndvol32.exe from my computer at work to the one at home. Put it in c:\windows\system32. Worked fine. |
