Lack of Sound Due to Onboard MIDI?
Excuse my ignorance, but I'm not sure the significance of the onboard MIDI. Can it cause a conflict with a SB Live card being installed?
This is an old Gigabyte board with onboard sound and MIDI. I disabled the onboard AC97 sound and installed the Sound Blaster card. I noticed that the computer was also installing a Roland MPU-401 in the MIDI devices. I can get no sound, so I try uninstalling the device in Device Manager. It would automatically detect and install it on reboot, so I dug around and found the MIDI port listed under Onboard Peripherals in BIOS. When I disabled the MIDI port in BIOS, it caused 98SE to load only in Safe Mode. Is the lack of sound due to the SB card being installed while the MIDI port was still enabled? Could that be the root of the problem, or am I barknig up the wrong tree? Thx.

I think you might have a good chance, following your own idea: making sure that both the onboard sound and the onboard midi resources are disabled in the Bios first, then uninstalling, and then reinstalling the Sound Blaster Live.
While in the Bios to make sure the onboard sound and midi are disabled, before you exit, see if you can find the setting to "Force Update ESCD", or "Redetect ESCD", or some similiar wording - this will make sure the Bios changes and resource reallocation have a good start. Then Save & Exit. Seems like you should be OK with an SB Live - though their installation routines can be a little crazy. . . . Gary |
