System restore, what is lost

If I do a system restore in XP Pro, I know that I will need to download any security patches from Microsoft to catch up. I guess I will also need to update my AV program as well as AdAware, and Spybot S&D , but what about programs that I may have loaded since then, do they also have to be reloaded. Also, if I made changes to an Excel worksheet, or Word document, will they also be lost ? Many thanks, Mike

Your data (Word and Excel documents) will not be affected. Programs will, so you may have to do some reinstalls.

It all depends on how far back you restore. If you have only run into problems recently and can solve the problem by restoring back say, a week or two, you won't be losing much of anything.
