Dual boot when not wanted

to be honest i dont know if this goes in the Windows Vista/Server 2003/XP/2000/NT forum or the win9x forum.

my uncle has a compaq laptop. pretty standard laptop preloaded with windows xp home. suddenly he says that it boots to windows 98. i thought he was joking till i had a look at it... and it actually does it shows the old Win98 boot screen but then goes directly to command prompt.

the only way to make it boot to windows XP is by pressing F8 like a maniac until it ask if you want to load XP. in the win98 command prompt i cant seem to load windows from there

just to prove im not a complete n00b i booted to the XP CD and ran a repair console. i thought fixmbr would do it... but unfortunatley it still didnt help. please advise TIA

You can just alter boot.ini when in windows xp and delete windows 98 from boot.ini

Fixmbr - Repair Master Boot Record with MBRFix from Windows 2000, XP etc. instead of using fdisk /mbr.
Master Boot Record : The first sector on a disk, containing the partition table and master boot loader. Abbreviated MBR.

Go to Start > Run
Type in msconfig and hit enter
Select the BOOT.INI tab and click the button "Check all Boot Paths"
When it prompts you if you want to delete the invalid boot path click Yes.
