Vista Questions!

I have this questions and thought u could give me the answers...

What are the system requierments to run vista "fast" with all the blows and whistles?
When is the official launch of the OS?
Is there a beta version of the OS?

Vista

MS (on their site) says that Vista Premium needs 1Gz 32-bit (X86) or 64bit (x64) processor
1 gb memory
a graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2
40gb minimum HD with 15GB free space
DVD-ROM drive
Audio output capability
Internet access.

It will run with less,no doubt but not as fast. There is a beta version out but it is no longer available for evaluation.

Download this.
It will scan your machine and let you know what, if anything, you need to upgrade.

Vista's Official launch --- The latest I've seen is business availability in November (this year) and consumer release around January 2007 http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...eliveryPR.mspx --There may be more recent news concerning official launch, since these tend to slip in the Microsoft world. They could also surprise us all, and get it out the door in time for the holiday shopping season.

Beta(s) --- a public Beta was available (Beta 2), but I believe that public beta's distribution period has ended. [Those who already have it can continue to use it, test it, and receive updates -- but new beta testers are not sought, nor is the public download available anymore (officially). Beta2 is time-sensitive, and no Beta2 installations will function after a date in summer of 2007 (I can't remember if it was June or July 2007)].

And, here's the link to the official Microsoft Vista home page -- anything you want to know about Vista is there http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.aspx

that should be fine, but run that tool someone linked too.

I'd imagine for Nvidea, any 6000 series and up should run it, especially if you have 256mb of memory.

I think the real issue isnt the specs required to run Vista quick .. but the specs required to run some serious apps on Vista quick. Is Vista going to boot up and then get out of the way to gracefully run resource heavy apps like Photoshop or even games when the bar is already set so very high! I'm interested in seeing how the conversation evolves around that as Vista gets closer to release and s/w mfgers put out newer versions.
That is of course the danger of talking of system requirements for an OS. Far too often people measure their system performance in terms of boot-ups or the "prettiness" of the GUI.

The 6200 LE is a VERY slow card - 256mb ram notwithstanding. You may be able to run Vista with bells and whistles, but it's not going to be smooth. Note that you will need at least 1gb of system ram!

I am running Vista on a Abit AV8 with a 3000/939 cpu and a AGP 5700 ultra and 2 gigs of ram...it runs pretty fast

Vista is more about cpu speed and graphics power than anything...but always double the required amount of ram....you know like xp says 256 but 512 runs good...

Vista (Beta 2) comes in a 32-bit edition as well. I'm running it on this machine with an AMD Sempron 2600+ and only 512 RAM.

It seems to run slow for the first five minutes or so and then sanps in very nicely. I'm wondering if that is just debugging routines running with start up...

I'm running Beta2 with mostly the default services, a firewall, the Vista version of "Windows Defender", and avast! antivirus on a modest system with a Barton 2600+, a 64mb Ati Radeon 7500 (no Aero here! - or gaming), 1gb of system memory -- and it's pretty snappy. Loads quickly, runs Office programs with good speed. I've noticed that the baseline memory usage is over 512mb before anything other than the services & security programs are running - so I would imagine for any serious work beyond the average Office work (heavy multitasking, or any photo/video editing [Photoshop/Premiere]) -- it would be good to have at least 2gb of system memory.

I just got a new hard drive and I want to install vista on it. I went to the M$ website and it says the download is not available anymore. Is there any other way to download it or am I out of luck?

Hi swampdonkey

As you saw, the public beta is no longer available for download from Microsoft for the general public.

MSDN subscribers (developers) still have access to the beta, and to many other interim builds that are not made available to the public.

You don't have long to wait (theoretically) for the public launch of Vista, as I'd expect it will be available at some point between November of this year and February of next year.

The Microsoft Vista site has lots of info about it, plus screenshots & all -- if you'd like an in-depth look http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.aspx (the next-best thing to a beta test)
