Windows XP/New MOBO
Hello All,
I am having to install a new MOBO in my wife's computer. Old one went south. She is running Windows XP home, and I was wondering if I change the motherboard and processor can I still boot up Windows? Is it plug and play with the new MOBO/Proc combo? If not is there any way around it? I really don't want to have to start over, she has a lot of valuable stuff on the drives. Thanks in advance for the help.

What type of computer is it? store bought branded or custom built?
Do you have a full Windows installation disk or a recovery disk? Do you have the driver CD for the new motherboard?

It is a custom built. I am replaceing a ASUS P4T-E with a NEW ASUS P5P800. I have the Full Windows XP installation disk. I should have the ASUS installation CD-ROM. The MOBO/Proc should be here tomorrow from Mwave. Thanks.

By using the same make board it will probably boot up as long as the chip sets are not massively different, XP will have native drivers for the mobo and cpu but they may not be installed, be prepared to do a repair install and if you are really lucky and it boots, hopefully all you will need to do is update the chipset drivers from the new mobo CD.

So if I am reading this right. Pretty much plug it in. Cross fingers. And if it boots. Use the enclosed MOBO cd to update the drivers. If not try repair install from the windows xp disk. After that we go nuclear.

Thats about it, remember to practise safe static when you are changing the mobo.

OK guys, new MOBO/Proc arrived and installed. When windows starts it says system did not start normally pick and option. I tried start normally and it goes to a blank screen and reboots. Event tried safe mode same thing. I am now trying the repair install. I put my xp disc in and selected repair option. It asks me what version to log on of which I select the c drive. Then is has me at a command prompt. What next? I am unfamiliar with the repair functions. I typed help for a list of commands and nothing jumps out at me. I ran chkdsk everything was ok. Please Help????

Don't select the repair option on the first offering. Follow the instructions in this thread.
