Weird problem with thumbnails in explorer

Hello again. Another strange problem I've encountered.

I've decided to better organize my 3000+ pictures (uniform, chronological folder names, etc.). I've run across a problem in the last folder where I noticed several duplicates. But when clicking on the thumbnail of one of those duplicates, another picture came up. It appears that half of the duplicates aren't really duplicates, they're other pictures with the wrong thumbnail. Funny thing is, by appending their file name with a space and a '1', the thumbnails started correctly representing their corresponding picture. I keep a copy of all pictures on another drive. The weird thing is this: When copying/pasting the correct picture into the folder I was working in, it immediately assumed the wrong thumbnail... right before my eyes. The only fix was changing the file name.

The only thing I can tell you that I have a suspicion about, is throughout the whole time, I was using batch rename in Windows explorer.

I'm sure not many people have heard of this one, but am hoping one or two of you have.

My ears are now open.

Thanks.

Thumbnails get confused very easily in XP. To solve the problem, turn the thumbnail cache off.
