Ive tried booting with all unneccesary hardware removed ive removed both sticks of ram and ran memtest on bros comp both checked good. triple checked all connections inside case nothing loose, even tried bros psu no help. from time to time it will go into windows disk check and everything checks good. All the trouble started after i installed avg free and folding at home thinking those might have messed me up i uninstalled both and restored to before they were installed. neither helped. about one in fifty tries i can get logged on but if i restart or shutdown and reboot it hangs at black windows xp screen. ive tried every thing i know short of total reinstall which i dont really want to do. im stumped

You don't have to do total reinstall try doing repair install instead.

Have you run diagnostics on the hard drive yet? What are you using for a power supply?

The ones from the hard drive manufacturer. You run them from a bootable floppy or CD.
