Slow Down After Sp2 Download
I have recently taken the plunge at long last and loaded SP2, the main difference that i have seen is that when i fire up computer anything to do with the web takes ages to load, as it does the page gradually fills in the detail, whereas normally they just open up altogether, virtually instantly.
This includes Hotmail and all of my favorite forums and websites including this one. After about an hour everything returns back to normal download speeds. I do not allow auto update and looking at task manager nothing else appears running during this time and system idle is at 98%. |

Try running disk cleanup and defragmenting the hard drive .
SP2 may have moved pieces of IE around to fit the patches onto them.

Never heard of this after installing SP2.
Did the install seem to go smoothly? Have you tried uninstalling it and installing it again? It's only about a 30 minute process on most systems. -Kev

Hi gilera
Immediately after downloading & installing SP2, the Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates are often running (the firewall by default, and auto-updates are recommended during the install). If you enabled Automatic Updates, it could be downloading the forty, fifty, or sixty critical patches since SP2 was released. I repaired a Win2000 box today, and it had 48 Critical patches to install since SP4 for Win2000 was released. It can take a long time, even on broadband, to download that many patches. It might be that after Windows Update has all the current patches available, you won't have that lag time at startup. Just a thought - . . . Gary |
