IE6 freezing up
Has any one else heard anything about some thing to take place on the 22nd of this month, that will stop the IE6 freeze ups.? I am having a terrible time with it, I sure hope there is some thing to it. Since you cannot repair IE, in XP, like you could with 98, what can a person do that thinks there is some thing wrong with IE.?
Thanks.............Gunny |

That's supposed to be the date Microsoft releases a patch to fix the problem according to this article from another thread.

Use an alternate browser till they release the fix. Make sure you have automatic updates enabled if you can't get to Windows Update manually.

IE problem
Sounds like we just have to sit back and wait until they come out with the right patch. Too bad we have to be at their mercy. ha ha ha Some ones suggestion to go in and delete the update is not that simple, I checked it out and they threaten you with causing other problems with other programs if you delete it. Question is like what Dirty Harry said, well punk did I use all my bullets, or do I have one left, do I feel like gambling.???? Naaaa I think I will wait.
Take care and thanks..............Gunny |

IE freeze up
Hi GLC
Nothing there yet I just checked. I thought it would show up last night when I signed off. No Dice. I am hoping this is what is causing my problems, it seemed to start right around the last update, and as far as I can remember I have not done any thing new or different. Nothing shows up in my spyware hunters, and every thing else is ship shape. So heres hoping. Thanks............Gunny |

I couldn't find any update either, so I went searching the update site for the name of the problematic patch file and found this.

ie freeze up
Well that is just great now I have to mess with this thing until they make up their stupid minds to offer a patch, I am getting tired of booting this thing every time I turn around. IE not responding, I am getting sick of seeing that.
What if I just deleted the last update.? What will that do, any harm. And can I delete it.? Thanks...........Gunny |

Rather than just deleting it, uninstall it in Control Panel--Add or Remove Programs.
Check the Show Updates box at the top of the screen. That update will be near the bottom of the updates list and will show up as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB918899)". If uninstalling it causes problems with some other programs, pick whichever is the lesser of two evil's, and reinstall it if you have to.

IE freeze up
Hi All
I did just that went into Add and remove and removed it, so far don't notice any thing wrong yet. It seems to be working ok now. It was getting so bad it was taking me 5,6,8 times to try and get any where on the Internet, it kept freezing up, some times even taking away the cursor. So I had no choice then to reboot it all the time. And kept saying IE not responding. I guess what they are saying is there is not enough people complaining about problems with it this way, so they are not going to do any thing until they are forced too. Great people these Microsoft people. Cause a problem and wont fix it. How many people do they have to complain before they do some thing. I wonder is e-mailing them and raising cane with them, or even better calling them up and complaining. Thanks...............Gunny |

IE freeze up
Well GLC sounds like you have tried to talk to them before, ha ha thats funny. Don't waist my time. I guess that is why sites like this one have so much knowledge about things like this because you cannot rely on so many outfits to offer you assistance of any sort. So what do you do you figure it out yourself, or go to a great site like PCmech and get the answers, 99.9% of the time. In this day and age that is a real shame. You are no better then your support. Because there is always going to be problems.
I was up until 1:30AM last night and as I was signing off there was a download come through, I have not checked it out yet to see what it was. I sure hope this is the one they said they was not going to give out, It might renew my faith a little. Very little. Thanks and take care..............Gunny |

Hi Folks
Well I just went in and found out what the download was, it put the same sucurity update back in that I removed. I did not change the settings on my automatic update thing. But the strange thing is my computer seems to be ok, could it be that they changed the update or I just got a bad update the time before.? Strange!!!! Has any one seen this before, I just got it as I opened up IE, a little box jumped up there and basically said, "a generic host process for Win 32 process, has encountered a problem and must shut down" Another strange thing again. Thanks...........Gunny |

Get rid of that update again and change your automatic update settings to notify instead of automatically install - and review all updates before allowing an install.

IE freeze up
Hi GLC
Ok I will do that but what good does it do to look at them before you install them, don't you still have to go by their word, when they say it is nec. And still have to hope they are ok and not screwed up.????? Not being a wise guy, just wondering. What good does it do to review them.???? Thanks..............Gunny |

This may be a stupid question, but what the heck, I'm gonna throw it out here anyway. Microsoft says this problem only affects people using IE6 with Service Pack 1. Would the problem be fixed if XP users installed SP2 for WinXP? Because I thought there was an update for IE6 in that. At least my IE6 says it is version 6 with XP sp2 and I don't have any problem when I use IE6. Is there any possible help in this or am I thinking with my butt again? This wouldn't do much for those having the problem that use Windows 2000 either I guess.
Hey redvette.....one thing about having your automatic updates NOT set to automatically download is the fact that you can wait awhile before having to download the update. That's how I've got mine set up, to inform me of the update but not to download it automatically. I usually wait a good week or so after updates come out before I go and download them because I figure if any problems come up with one of them, by that time there'll be quite a few people complaining about it and getting the word out there, but it won't be on my machine yet. I think that might be what GLC was getting at possibly. Last edited by juppy; 08-24-2006 at 11:57 PM. |

IE freeze up
Hi Juppy
Yes you have a good idea there I will do that. Why didn't I think of that. ha ha Well they taught us a important lesson this time. To not have such blind faith in them and think they cannot make a mistake. They can and do make mistakes. I guess the biggest thing I am upset about is the way they did or didn't handle it. Do they think they are so big that they can do this or what.? The way I read it is they thought the thing did not affect enough people for them to bother messing around with it. Well w e learned our lesson Microsoft, now it is your turn. Make a mistake, correct it. Don't wait until people get aggravated with you about it. The heck with a Tuesday, fix it right away. Thanks................Gunny |

Found the workaround - disable HTTP 1.1. That's in Internet Options, advanced.

IE freeze up
Hi Glc
Work around...????? If you are meaning a work around for the problem with the freeze ups and stuff, I tried that some time ago, and it did not help, at least it did not help me, and the problems I was having. I read that too, earlier this week. Being it is working ok now do you think you should go back and enable it again like it has been all this time.? Or just leaving sleeping dogs lye. Thanks...................Gunny |

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - unless you enjoy playing around! Then again, I'm an alternative browser person, I only use IE when I absolutely have to.

IE freeze up
Juppy
I went to down load it and it say what I have is newer then what the download is, if you can believe that. Remember that same night that I deleted it, it did an automatic update for me, well that is what they are talking about. You figure. GLC>>I know you are right in saying get away from IE, but it is hard teaching an old dog new tricks. Or should I say old browsers. I just might one of these days. Probably the next time IE screws up. ha ha ha But they said they learned a lot from this boo boo, and it wont happen again. ha ha ha So do I believe them or not, that is the question. Of course I do, they would not lie to me. Thanks.............Gunny |

That's pretty weird. Looks like the patched update would still be newer. I'd probably still go ahead and apply the patch even though it says that it's older. Or did you already do that?

No I did not install it then, I thought what the heck, why should I. And being every thing was working ok, I decided to leave it the way it was. You are right I thought the same thing that is why I even tried it. I tried it again to be sure and it said the same thing. What ain't broke don't fix. Thanks.................Gunny |

IE freeze up
Thanks again GLC
I guess I was so eager to see this I overlooked all the details. I don't know why I would be eager to see it being my computer was working ok. Just a force of habit I guess. Sorry I will read all the small print next time. That is why they have save guards, for people like me. I should have known why would they be coming out with a fix like this when they said they were not going too. Makes sense to me. After all I have full faith in them now. ha ha ha ha Thanks...........Gunny |
