Replace Mobo & CPU with XP ?

I'm thinking of replacing (upgrading) the mobo & CPU in my PIII unit with an Intel board and CeleronD .

I've heard that XP doesn't like major new hardware. I've gone to the MS web site and looked up their instructions on "upgrade an existing motherboard" it seems simple enough except that they tell you to start setup of XP and "just as the computer begins to restart" turn it off.
The only way I know of to do that is to turn off the PS switch or pull the cord.

Any other known problems ?

Thanks,

BKB

I'd like to see a link to that article

Are you sure it didn't mention doing a "repair" installation?

When you change major parts like mobo and CPU you should make repair install of Windows XP because you have changed system configuration and windows must make same changes to boot up properly!!!

Thats pretty interesting concerning the shutdown of the PC when windows installation reboots itself, and replace the MOBO then, and I can see what you are doing there and since Microsoft recommends it, that may be the way to go about it. That may be even be a better way than a repair installation, which is what most of us around here do, because it may just clean out the old stuff a little better from the old motherboard.

If you check our thread in the Tips and Tricks section, you may simply be able to update the IDE controller drivers to "standard dual IDE" and shut down - swap boards and fire it right up.

Thanks -- I'll check it out.

Any suggestions on the mobo for the Celeron D 351 3.2 -- that machine is used mainly for word processing and low quality graphics printing for elementary school.

Thanks again,

BKB

Same chipset, but I feel Asus is a higher quality manufacturer. If you want to keep your business locally, it's not a bad board.

Thanks glc

I do like to keep the business local - they have been very good. I'll ask about the Asus board and prices. I'd like to keep quality in my PC.

Where do I ask log in log on questions ?

Thanks,

Log in log on? If you are referring to Windows, right here is the right place.

I was talking about the Forum -- sometimes as I log off a window comes up and has "all cookies cleared" - the next time I open the web page I need to enter name and password again.

OK -- sometimes it recognizes me and logs me on automatically and sometimes I have to put in the name and password. No big deal - I think I can handle it.

Thanks !

Question New thinking on Upgrade !

It has been a while since I posted here - I've changed my thinking on what I want to do for an upgrade.

I'm thinking that if I get a new Mobo and CPU for the machine that is now a P4 3gig and move that mobo with P4 to the machine that is now PIII I'll be able to upgrade both with only 1 mobo and CPU purchase.

The objective is to speed up the networking to the printer and both machines. The main usage is Internet mail, brousing, and boards ( Dialup -- nothing faster available here without sattelllite) and I edit Digital photos (not as fast as I'd like) I'm not into gaming - just want speed in the digital editing and overall performance. The 2nd PC is used mainly for Word Processing and low quality graphics for elementary school - prints to the Epson RX500.

Question - What Mobo and Processor would anyone recommend (I'm thinking Pentium D ?) ?????

Thanks in advance,

That kind of depends on your budget.
If you can afford to get a Core 2 Duo, they are the best line of processors currently available.
If not go with a 9xx over the 8xx series Pentium Ds.
Motherboard, Intel or Asus with an intel chipset, and onboard video if it isn't going to need a video card for gaming.
Onboard is fine for editing, because that type of stuff is handled by the processor.
Motherboard chipset will depend on the processor choice.

Thanks - I don't know why my signature with all the info on both PCs isn't showing.

I'm not as worried about budget as desired outcome. Will there be a big difference between the Pentium D and P core duo just for digital editing ?

Thanks

If you go with any socket 775 motherboard, you will probably need a new power supply too.

Honestly, that P3 is plenty adequate for the work you are doing with it. Why don't you try installing the printer on the P3 and sharing it the other direction and see what happens?

Thanks glc

That's a good Idea - I just figured the P4 would handle the print jobs faster and I use it for graphics (digital photo) editing - when I want to print - would the PIII handle it OK ?

Is there a simple USB switch that would hot switch both the PIII and P4 and allow printer function monitoring ?

Thanks GLC,

Is there any one in particular that you'd recommend ?

I sent an e-mail to Epson and asked them - no answer yet.

I did put a new Power supply in the PIII - CoolMax CXI 500w 120mm fan (ordered it before I checked out the PS recommendations here) and have an HEC WinPower 550w ordered for the P4 -- they will both be beter than the 200 & 250 w supplies that came in them.

Thanks again,

BKB
