Is there a program to create a document based on the files in a directory?

I am wanting to find a program for XP that will create a txt or xls file that lists all the files in a given directory. I have many files that i keep on many dif cd's, and I would like to have all these put into a document so i don't have to reload every cd if im' not sure if i have that file or not. Thanks

If you don't need anything fancy, just redirect the dir command to a text file.

"dir *.* > listing.txt" will create a file called listing.txt with all of the files in the directory.

wow, very interesting. I didn't know that command existed. I can use this, but if anyone has any other program, that could be used in excel, basically anything that can be sorted alphabetically, that would be better. thanks.
