domain name question

hello, this seems like a rather amature question... but its something thats been bugging me.

i have a dyndns name, its asdf.serveftp.net, because of this i wanted to make the domain in my house be asdf.serveftp.net so i could easily integrate an mx host. setting up the domain as asdf.serveftp.net worked just fine, but when i tried to name my server "server" i was not able to, because a server already exists at server.serveftp.net, this isnt a problem, i just thought it was interesting.

the my question comes from the name given to the domain. although the domain is listed EVERYWHERE as asdf.serveftp.net, when i go to login to the server, or to any computer, the logon to section of the login box says SERVER.

why does it say server and not serveftp, or something else....?
