Problems with new OS
While installing my WinXP media center software I have encountered some problems, that I feel are keeping me from installing other properly.. My package came with 3 cds. Windows medial center install disk one and two, plus one that says Windows Xp meida center updates for version 2005. while installing the Os I would get a message "please insert windows xp professional sp2 disk now" I don't have such a disk other than the third one mentioned.. When I installed the disk it did nothing at all. So I just chose cancel and the OS completed the install process..
Now when trying to install some key software, such as video, and mb drivers I sometimes get the message.."The install shield (ikernal.exe) could not be launched. The RPC server is unavailable... What can be the problem and how to correct. Do I need to reinstall the OS? I can't even get my wireless ethernet card installed properly to connect to the internet to get available updates..

Yes, you need to go back and start over. Assuming that you are getting the SP2 disk prompt while install Cd 2 is in the drive, replace it with install Cd 1 at that point. Here is a pretty detailed guide to installing MCE. After you finish up with the stuff in the guide, install the stuff from the update Cd, and any other drivers that you need to update to newer versions than what came on the Cds that shipped with your components, don't go wild and install every possible updated driver, just get the ones that you already know that you need to have. Make sure you install an antivirus program and have a firewall running before you go on the internet. Then hit windows update for any newer updates.
