Dll errors and non booting of XP Pro
When I turn the PC on, it boots to the XP "welcome" page then pops up with a DLL runtime error, Program: \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\Winlogon.exe
When I click the OK or the X to get off this messege, the OS dies and the system reboots. I tried to open it in safe mode, choosing the 'Administrator' option, but it stuck on 'Loading your personal settings'. Would a repair of the OS work using the XP pro disc. Or are there any other options available? Alex |

I would try the repair option from CD first, Have you recently updated or installed any software? How about the "System Restore" option in XP, do you have it enabled?
Just some ideas. Mike

I think it was a problem which occured when the Broadband was connected and was downloading a games program (quite safe), and a baby switched the wall socket off. Ever since then, it'll not boot to the normal desktop nor into safe mode.
Therefore I can't try System Restore, so I will give the repair a whirl. Thanks Alex |

I tried the repair option from the XP Pro CD, but after what I assumed was a successful repair, it went to the 'Welcome' screen and did exactly the same thing - popped up with the error messege, I clicked cancel and it rebooted.
I still cannot get to a desktop of any description. I have ordered another HDD for the PC as I don't want to format the apparently faulty one, there are files on there which are required. I'll pop it into a different PC and try to resolve this issue. If you have any ideas where to go from here, I'd be grateful if you'd let me know. Thanks Alex |

If you have another computer nearby why not slave this hard drive to it, copy all your important files to the other hard drive, install original hard drive back into original computer, and reinstall windows over itself (without formating). The only thing to get re-writen would be the windows folder.

Thanks for the advice Mike. I'll give that a go when we get the new HDD in. I'll keep you posted.
Cheers Alex |
