XP Booting Problems
Alright, so ive been running my computer (that i built) for a couple months now. problems have came and gone, none of which couldnt be fixed. but this one has got me stumped.
After the windows loading screen it should go to a screen that says WELCOME! and then to where i choose a username. but instead after the loading screen the screen just goes gray. the moniter is still on and is getting signal from the computer but it is just a gray screen. Now the first few times this happened i tried letting it sit and after about 10 min it would just work out of no where and start working again. but now no matter how long i let it sit there it just is a blank gray screen. I thought it was just a driver issue or something so i reformatted it. same thing. tried reformatting with diffrent disc. same thing. tried reformmatting with xp home (instead of pro). same thing. i was thinking a hard drive issue but before trying anything hardware i want to see if i can solve it without replacing anything or if anyone ever encounterd this issue. Thanks in advance.... Last edited by jer888; 09-04-2006 at 10:01 AM. |

Full system specs including the brand and wattage of the power supply, please.
You can run diagnostics on the ram and hard drive, both from bootdisks. |

** Memtest86+ V1.65 (10/01/2005) **
Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win) Download and open the zip file, extract everything to an empty folder, read the readme. On the Western Digital page, read the instructions. |

alright so this is what i did. I put the hard drive thing on a floppy and went the computer. took it out of its case and replugged everything in. turned on the computer and now everything works! how can this be. there are no loose screws or anything to short something out. im happy and confused at the same time. i dont want to put it back in and have the same thing happen again.. thanks

I am having a similar problem, the windows logo screen loads, and then a black screen. My mouse pointer is visible and works, but the account page never loads. I also have an Athlon running XP Home, and have never encountered this problem before.

Fireman, please start your own thread so both you and jer can have dedicated support for your individual problems. Posting in someone else's thread with your problem is called "thread crapping" and we frown on that here at PC Mech. Thanx.

WinXP Problems,
Quote:
Can we run diagnostic service on RAM and HDD from winxp CD? Where do we get this option in winxp CD? Do you know any perticular website from where we can run diagnostic service to test RAM and HDD? I wanted to share something, this problem of loading winxp usually occurs when their is something wrong with boot.ini file and when their is a device driver causing such problem. Has he tried going into safe mode? Last edited by ITlover; 09-15-2006 at 05:14 AM. |
