win xp home oem won't start

Hi, my friend got a pc with win xp home oem. Yesterday he updated norton anti virus. After restarted his machine, it won't boot to windows in anyway(normally or safe mode, tried all options from the 'F8' menu except debugging mode, either way it just restart by itself before hitting the windows loading screen). He need his data from PC since he never backup(only one partition), so I suggested to make a repair install of windows, but he lost his cd.

So now, is there a way to fix that problem? And could it be done without the cd? What kind of CD does he need? Does it has to be a CD for OEM machine with the same SP version?

Thanks.

Basically yes, can you slave his harddrive to another machine and backup his data to the harddrive of that machine?
