Can I automate startup and shutdown?

I need to know if there is a way that I can have a computuer running xp pro start up at a certain time then run a backup using nero (I know I can set that to run whenever I want as long as the machine is powered on) and then shut down again.

The shutdown is easy. All you have to do is create a new batch file with one line in it: "shutdown -s". Then use Task Scheduler to run that batch file when you want.

Getting it to power on at a specific time is BIOS-dependent, however. Check your BIOS to see if you can schedule it to turn on at a certain time. Or, if your computer has a Wake-On-Keyboard feature, you can create a Rube Goldberg-like device to drop something on your keyboard at the appropriate time.

The mobo listed in your sig has power on by RTC alarm. You can use it to powerup.
