Keep getting a "checking for consistency" message when I boot up?

I have WinXP SP and a separate D drive partition for backups. When I boot up I get a blue screen telling me its checking for drive consistency. Anyone know what that means and how to fix it? Thanks.

Is the drive formatted NTFS or FAT32? What type of programs do you have running in the background? Do you ever get any messages about programs that aren't responding when you shutdown?

System Specs might be helpful too.

I have various programs running in the background like anti virus and spyware. Yes, I do get those fail to respond messages when I try shutting down. The usual Windows bs.

It's possible that the programs that aren't responding are accessing that HD and when you shutdown the system and force those programs to close it's causing windows to do the check disc on next boot. You realistically shouldn't be seeing any fail to respond messages when shutting down your pc so there is something amiss there.

Run chkdsk /f manually on all partitions from a command prompt.
