Upgrading from 98 to XP corp?

I have a friend with an older machine running Win 98. I'd like to install WinXP Corp but don't know if the machine would take it. Is there a program would tell me that? WinXP has much better plug and play for the drivers but just don't want to waste my time if it's not going to work. Thanks.

The first thing to do is to assess whether you've got the min. system requirements to run XP. Make sure that you've got adequate processing power, RAM and hard drive space that will not only allow a boot to XP but wont make your installation sluggish. Better to have a functional Win98 than an XP system that might potential just thrash around.

Insert your XP CD when you're running Windows 98. You should see what looks like a series of screens like this. Select the tool CHECK SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY.
Alternatively, you may download it from here (last link):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...g/advisor.mspx
And run it before you run the XP install.

If you have a custom built computer, always helps to do your own research on your hardware. Either use the device manager within Win98 or open up your computer and list the base hardware you've got - like Motherboard, Video card, modem, network card, sound card if any etc. Then check w/ the manufacturer website, download and burn to CD all available XP drivers - that will help you hit the ground running.
