XP startup error

When I start my system, the Windows logo screen loads, and then goes into a black screen with just my mouse pointer. I do not have the restore disk, is there a way to restore without it?

did you try to post in safe mode yet ?
pressing f8 wile it booting up and it should boot in safe mode if there are no major hardware problems.

I have tried to boot in safe mode, all that changes is the nice little 'Safe mode' border around the screen. I am running on an HP, and i found something called a " PC System Recovery" by pressing F10 at startup, but when that loads, i get a blue screen with the message

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
C:SystemRoot\system32\Config\SECURITY
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Have you seen this before?

ok thats a good start, now while your in safe mode go to accessories
system tools
and then system restore.
you should be able to do a system restore to a date when your system was running good,

if that fails to work, then you may need to find your xp system restore cd's that came with the computer and reload everything.

unless someone else can come up with a better idea.

that error I think is telling you that the registry if bad

I believe he just said he cannot boot past the safe mode opening screen.

This sounds like a coruupt boot leader or bad drive. If you can find someone with a copy of XP, try to use it to boot from CD and perform a repair install.

If it will not take you through the steps for installation, I would be looking at the drive.

Ok, I have received an XP Pro install disk, but it doesn't run when I turn on my computer. Do I need to boot from the cd?

Before doing that, I'd run diagnostics on the hard drive. Determine the manufacturer and download their diagnostics.

If you can not boot from CD I would be thinking hardware problems. Is the optical drive functional for anything else? Have you tested your memory and run diagnostics on the hard drive?

http://www.memtest.org/

Go to your hard rive manufacturer's website and download diagnostic tools from tech support.
