Question Clean install problems-hard drive not recognized

Hey all,

I am trying to do a clean install on a new build:

Asus A8R-MVP motherboard
Seagate 300GB SATA Hard drive
AMD 64 3800
2x1GB OCZ RAM
Radeon X1900 GT Vid Card

When I am in the install process, especially at the hard drive selection screen (where you select a drive to be partitioned) there are no drives present. All four slots say "Unknown Disk: No disk in drive" . I cant select any of the "unkown disks" and whn I hit enter, del, or the arrow keys, i get taken to an error screen which gives me the stops: 0x0000008E, (0xc0000005, 0x8081A799, 0xF6FF2778, 0x00000000).

I tried partitioning the hard drive with the manufacturers CD, but the problem persisted. I also moved the RAM configuration around to every possible config (which is the windows solution to Stop: 0x0000008E during setup) but to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Is the hard drive recognized in the bios? You probably need to install the SATA drivers from the disk that came with the mobo in order to have hdd recognition. Also, make sure you are using XP w/SP2 or you won't be able to see the entire hdd.

If the same stop error persists after installing the SATA drivers, test the memory with Memtest86+. You may have defective ram or a ram compatibility issue too.

So, my HD is recognized in BIOS, it is set to SATA, I installed the drivers from the HD CD, I also swapped out my RAM. It still wont see it or go through setup! I really don't know what to do anymore? Could it be the onboard memory? Perhaps the Vid Card Memory?

Swapping ram isn't the same as testing. Memtest86+ will show errors if the mobo and ram are incompatible too. Another question, do you have any usb devices connected? How bout the front panel usb connector? If you do, disconnect them until the install is completed.

SATA issue

One thing you should check is what version of SATA is your hard drive and what does your motherboard support. If you have a SATA 2 and your motherboard only supports SATA 1 you may get an error.
