DVD causing hard freeze

Ok first of all this is an Uncle's computer.

Its a computer with the following:
Antec TruePower 400 wat PSU
Soyo P4X400 Lite motherboard
Intel Celeron 2.7Ghz processor
PNY 512MB PC2700 RAM
Gigabyte DVD (read only)/CD-RW drive
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM HD
WinXP Home with SP2, latest updates (updated it fully for him today)
TDK 1x floppy drive (everyone's gotta have one )

This started about a month ago he says, just out of the blue. He attempted to play a DVD movie on his system (has played that same movie many times) but when Power DVD (Cyberlink) attempted to play it completely locked the system up. Rebooted and tried WMP, same thing. I got it here now and updated. Cleaned spyware ect. Updated to newest packages and all. Still the same thing. I REALLY DON"T wanna reload XP. That would be a pain in the butt BIG time. And until next week (about Thursday) I don't have the hard drive space, even between BOTH my computers, to back up his system and reinstall XP. I'm trying to find answers, but I can't figure it. Tomorrow morning I'm gonna start again by cleaning and reinstalling the ATI Radeon 7000 drivers again (the Power DVD software came with that card). So any help guys?

Have you got DVD playing software in one of your machines? have you tried the DVD in one of your machines to make sure its not a hardware fault?

No...tomorrow I'll switch out the DVD player with the TDK DVD RW drive in my system. But see the thing is it will work with CD music discs, MP3 CD's, application CD's, just about any CD. Its just DVDs

UPDATE:

It turns out the DVD's will play in VLC player. Any idea as to why they would play in VLC player, but not in WMP or Power DVD?

I got it fixed. It turned out to be the ATI catalyst 6.5 drivers. Switched them out to the Omega 6.5 drivers and everything works fine now. Even fixed his long-ago problem of not be abble to play online videos such as MSN video and CNN Pipeline.
