3 years ago, we set up our 150 servers with 4GB system partitions (Windows 2000 - FAT32). There is almost no other software other than drivers installed on the partition. Unfortunately, with all the Windows updates, our system partitions are getting full. The servers each run a LAN and are uplinked to our WAN.
We have removed screen savers and virtually all BMPs and sound files. We've only the bare essentials in Windows setup and accessories. We've run the disk cleanup regularly. (The units are not set up with internet access so there are no internet cache or history files to worry about.) Some of the folders that I'm not sure about, I have compressed. What can we SAFELY remove or relocate from the system partition? What else can I do to increase free space? |

Font files, desktop images.

4GB system partition for Win2k is wayy too small to begin with. Consider using a partition resizing utility to increase it. Have you cleared the temp files?

I not only would use a utility to resize the partitions, I'd convert them to NTFS. Unfortunately, if they are Windows 2000 "Server", partitioning software is very expensive, Partition Magic won't run on Server, only Professional.

It sounds like a nightmare x 150.
What else are they running? How big a hard drive do they have? I would seriously consider even a reformat and reinstall. If they are used for the same purpose, make an image of one and reimage all of the others. Make sure that you run SysPrep first to remove SID's first.

Yup - single server is $299, a technician license is $499, and Enterprise is $999.

Or a mere $1.99 or $3.33 or $6.66 per server.150 is a huge number of badly configured servers (space and FS), especially if mirroring is not an option. |

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. They have two 32 GB SCSI hard drives. Talking about imaging, you know, the first one was set up this way and the rest were imaged from that one. I guess I'll look into a partition manager.

Sounds like someone did that who had no experience with Win2K, just WinNT.
