XP recovery ??? SYSTEM file bad

I have an XP computer that won't boot. It says that
\windows\system32\config\system is corrupted or missing

It says to put in the XP CD and press R to bring up the repair console. I do that---and then what? All I get is a DOS prompt. I did check some help files at MS, but it just mentioned the DOS commands that are available, and I don't see how they would help me repair the SYSTEM file.

How do you go about repairing a corrupt file?

thats simplw, just boot up with the cd and do a full install, at one point it will ask you if you want to repair a existing install, click yes.
it will then proceed to reinstall windows and not change any of your files or settings.

You need to search on your error message, not just do what it tells you on the screen.
