Multiple Problems

What would cause a whole system to lock up, just by installing a Cd in the the drive? This has happened to me twice today.. While inserting a cd the system just locks up and I have to push the power button to shut it down.. Also sometime windows will take 3 minutes to reach the desktop and sometime just 30 sec.. Here is a complete system specs.

MB: ASUS A8N32-SLI
CPU: AMD 64X2 Dual core processor toledo 4800
Video: EVGA Nvidia Gefource 7900 GT
Sound: Slound Blaster Audigy blaster 4
HD: Western Digital 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA Raptor
Optical Lite-On DVD/Cd burner
OS: Windows XP Pro
Mouse/keyboard: Logitech MX 5000 wireless
RAM: Corsair XMS Extreme 2GB (2x1GB) PC/3200

BTW CPU temp 45C MB temp 50C

The HD was tested and came out ok, but I'm still woundering if it can be the problem

This happened a 3rd time while installing Call to duty 2.. I also wounder if it is the cd drive itself...It is connected to the secondary ide controller... there is nothing on the first because I have a sata drive... Or could it have something to do with the drivers for the keyboard and mouse..they seem to be effected the most, because they are blue tooth....

Sounds like a bad cdrom drive. Unhook it, and see if the system responds better. How is the jumper set on that cdrom drive, and I also assume it used to work fine, so it is probably becoming defective.

I think ktkendall meant to disconnect the drive from the system entirely.

You can check if the drive is in DMA mode by going into the Device Manager (My Computer, right click, Properties) then finding your IDE controller. Right click on it and go to Properties.

Under secondary IDE it says it is DMA Mode.. I pan on buying another drive today so I have two for the purpase of burining cds.. And a second HD so If Im having problems with one I will still be able to use the computer via the other drive.. Now would it be wise to buy a second SATA or just a ATA drive... Which would be better for playing games and runing other apps..

Always use SATA for hard drives if you have the choice and the available ports.

Raptors are excellent, but I would go with a standard 7200rpm drive. The Seagate 7200.10 drives have excellent performance, close to the Raptor. And best of all, they have more space for less cash.

I bought another raptor drive, this was before I saw this post.. One question does these drive reguire any special software? Microsoft updates said it had some soft raid controller software, but not sure if I even need it.. I have no Idea since this is the first time I have used sata drives..

I experienced another issue, but solved it at least for now anyway.. After I installed XP Pro and all the software on my second drive, things went well, until I installed Zone Alarm.. I have use it for the last four yrs, and after it was installed on this drive the system locked up completly after Zone Alarm had to reboot my system.. It took me almost an hr just to try and get into safe mode so I can uninstall it.. After I installed it everything went back to normal...
