Verifieing windows xp

Hello and thanks for reading this, Right the prob i got is i have just installed xp (oem) and at registration i put all my details in and it said "cannot connect to server" with the option of retry or remind me later,

I took remind me later, I downloaded zonealarm,AVG,Windows defender as a base to start as i would have had a safeish system..So i knew my connection was ok..then i tried to register windows again with the same message "cannot connect to server" so i rebooted got to sign in and it said "your version of windows must be verified before you can log on..went through the whole process again and low an behold got the same connection message now its locked cant get on without the verification process Think they do this just to make revenue from national rate phone calls...please help

Let's be more specific - activation and registration are 2 different things. Activation is required, registration is optional.
