Serious problem re-installing XP

I was doing a total reformat and reinstall of my PC yesterday and after I reformatted the hard drive with OS on it I reinstalled XP, only when it reboots after installation it prompts me for 'Press any key for boot from CD' (like normal) and then goes to the black Windows XP screen with the bar at the bottom and hangs there indefinatly. I've checked BIOS settings to the best of my ability, my hardware is all there and fine and my boot order is how it should be. I'd really appreciate some help with this problem.

Thanks

Can you tell us the specifications of your hardware?
If you are using more than one stick of ram remove them all except one.
Make sure you have nothing other than the monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged in, remove all other peripherals.

Specs

I'll try that right now, in the meantime specs:
P4 2.4 GHz
512 RAM (in 2 DIMMs)
Windows XP Pro

Also:
Primary Master: WD 80 GB
Primary Slave: DVD Rom
Secondary Master: WD 40GB
Secondary Slave: DVD Writer

I hope that helps and thanks for the help.

Unplug the other hardrives untill you have installed XP on the primary master harddrive and try setting the DVD as the master on the second channel, I had an ASRock board moaning at me over the weekend for that exact same reason.
Take the ram down to one stick and you can set the drives as you want them after the install.
