xp error can't start up

Hi- I got the blue screen of death telling me that i had a video card file in error. I up dated the driver thinking that would fix the problem, but when i re booted i got a windows error(xp). I put in the xp disk thinking it could run diagnostics and help get xp running. I got to the choice of repairing an existing op and nothing really happened. Anyone know whats going on? What do i need to do to get this puter started? Thanks in advance- Chas

We need your specs and is that a restore disk or an XP cd ?
You've failed to start XP twice now and gotten a different error each time.
Can you start in safe mode? It sounds like you might be able to (You've installed drivers).
If you can then run chkdsk Start>Run>cmd>OK>chkdsk c: /f /r

If you can't then post back.

edit : to get into safe mode hold down F8 before XP loads

sounds like you have an imcompatible video card driver, follow pam123 advice on running check disk, if that doesnt work, then go into your device mananger open up your display adapters right click your video card choose properties>click the driver tab> and rollback the driver. then restart your pc as you normally would

if you go into your bios and change your boot options to boot from the cd drive first, can you get past posting to try and run the chkdsk that pam123 stated above?

Actually, it sounds more like it's time for chas to download and run the diagnostic for his drive which has developed major problems (anythng else would be giving him beep codes).
He can get that either from the drive manufacturer's site or the OEM site and in either case he follows the manufacturer's instructions for its' use.
If the drive passes Chas will need to do a full system repair, if it doesn't pass he'll either need to return it under the warranty or go shopping.
Chas do you need to salvage data from that drive?
