Dual boot Vista & XP

I've never done a dual-boot system before.

I have XP installed on 50 GB partition of a 100 GB drive. I want to install Vista on the other partition. Can I simple do that and select between the two systems at start up or is there more I need to know?

You may have trouble dual booting with Vista. The new RC1 release is pretty much "self installing" and when it detects a previous os it saves vital data to a folder but Vista takes over the hard drive. If you want to run both on the same machine, I'd buy a second hard drive, disconnect the present hdd during the Vista install and just alternate between the two so you can experiment/experience Vista.

OK, that's just as easy. I've got plenty of drives laying around the shop. Just for kicks, do you know how much drive space actually needed to load Vista? I don't mean the recommended amount of space but how much it actually takes up (this is for testing purposes only).

I havent had any trouble dual booting....

If you have a 80 gig drive....Install xp 1st...but before doing so... partition the drive into 2-40gig parts... then install xp... next install vista.. you may have to go thru the options to get where you want.. when it ask to upgrade or over write tell it no and point it to the spare partition....

you may also want to download vista boot pro... handy program.... you can change the order in which it boots from default and change the wait time...

if you install to seperate drives when you unhook the vista drive XP will no longer boot... you need vista boot pro to remove vista and keep the xp going ...

nice feature is you can point to the xp drive and run any program off the xp part without much hassle at all.... good luck...

edit...word to the wise...after creating the partitions in XP...DO NOT choose the quick format option... go for the full path...

OK, thanks for the tips, but I'm a little confused on one point. If I understand correctly, you say that once you boot Vista, XP will not boot? That kind of negates the reason for doing a dual-boot system, doesn't it?

If I misunderstood, clue me in.

my laptop is dual booted with xp and vista. i have xp installed first and about 25gb of free space cause i removed my acronis secure zone, then installed vista. i chose the advanced option and selected the unallocated space and everything went fine. i then checked to see if i could boot both OS's and everything was fine no problems for me. if you dont have any free space then you could use a program like partition magic to resize your current partition, or do what panana red stated which is use a second hard drive.

I mite have said that wrong....

Sorry if I did... What i meant to say is this... If you install both OS's and dual boot them they will work as you intend them if installed on 2 hard drives...

Xp on one and vista on the other...But if you unhook the vista drive...Xp will not boot with the vista drive unhooked...

If you decide you do not want vista...remove it with Vista boot pro... it will remove vista and xp will still be bootable by itself...

otherwise you be left fixing the XP MBR....to get it to boot...

but once you have it you wont want to remove it....

You won't have a choice next June, when the RC expires.

Sorry guys, I've been gone all weekend.

OK, that all makes a lot more sense now. I don't really care if it works after the release of Vista as this is just for testing purposes. So I will install in the way I originally had planned. XP is already installed on a 50% partition of a 100 GB drive. I will install Vista to the unallocated space.

Thanks!

Up and running with both systems bootable. Thanks for the tips.

RC1 is definitely quicker and more stable then any of the beta versions I've tested so far. It is nowhere near as "laggy" as the betas and I'm still running it on only 512 RAM!

There are still a few items the user will want to configure for themselves, but that's normal with any new OS.
