xp install inquiry

I've just completed my first build as of yesterday and I'm setting up windows xp pro. I got a disk from a friend who is a microsoft service representative and has some freebies lying around. The cd
key he gave me is invalid(or so says windows). I've heard that you can avoid giving the setup a product key and provide one at a later time. Is there any truth to this? and how so.

no way around it you either enter the product during setup, or you dont go any farther, plain and simple, if your friend is a service rep for M$ then he should have no problem getting you one that works if he is in the right dept, at least thats my opinion.

I believe that the product has to match with the type of install CD you have: OEM XP Pro product key with an OEM XP Pro CD/retail key with retail CD/etc.

flanzig1 - you are correct - I have tried to install XP Pro and use an XP Home serial ( I have a copy of each ) and it wouldn't accept the key!
