Login After Standby Behavior

I have three systems running XP pro. One built by me desktop, one HP desktop, and a Dell Inspiron laptop.

Well, the Dell laptop is running MCE, which is probably important, but it's MCE 2005 which is based off of pro.

When the desktops come out of standby, the welcome screen is displayed. When the laptop comes out of standby, the "this system is locked" password prompts.

Question: Is there any way for me to switch the laptop's standby behavior so that the welcome screen is displayed instead of the login box? I tried searching all of the settings to see if there are some differences between systems, but I can't seem to find anything.

I believe the option you are looking for is:

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced Tab

Untick the "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby"

I want the password though. On the desktops, I enter my password into the Welcome screen, but on the laptop, it only prompts that old fashioned box. It's just the different prompt to enter the password that's bugging me.

This is not too vital to me, but I'm the kind of person that demands to know why things are different when conditions are seemingly identical. I suspect it has to do with the laptop running MCE, but it's based off of XP Pro.

probably a registry key changed for some reason. which caused it to change behaviors and start displaying the classic login screen.

have you tried turning off the welcome screen, restart the pc, and then renable the welcome screen and restart?

It hadn't changed from welcome screen to password box, it was like that the first time I enabled a password protected standby.

The laptop is a few months old, but I hadn't messed with the settings too much, and only put a password on it somewhat recently.

The windows startup screen is the same welcome screen as the other systems. The different prompt only comes up after I return the system from standy mode.

I may be mistaken but I think that is how the login screen is displayed until you install .NET

Have you installed it?

found this on another forum

right-click on desktop => Properties => Screen Saver Tab => "On resume, display Welcome screen."

i dont know if this feature is there on MCE, cause i have xp pro and the option i see in the screen saver tab is "On resume, prompt for password" not the "on resume, display welcome screen"

It says on resume prompt for password.

It's MCE, but reports itself as XP Pro.

Hmm.

I enabled it to see if I'd get the welcome screen or password prompt, and I get the password promt here too.

I still think this might be a solution.

MCE 2005 is based on Home, not Pro. It's the original MCE that's based on Pro.

Thumbs up Mystery solved, with another taking its place!

I tried the fast user switch thingie yesterday and it didn't work. A prompt came up saying I had to unenable offline files in order to activate it. After I did that, I exited. My checking the box probably brought up the prompt and I must have to check the box again after that to enable it. But... I tried it again now, and it worked!!

Thanks for all the help guys, mystery solved!

GLC, I've attached screenshots of my Dell laptop order (from last April), MS's system info utility, and MCE's frontend "about MCE" link.

I took a look for these things a few months ago actually to determine which version of XP was under my copy of MCE. I kept reading that MCE 2005 was based off of Home, but I distinctively remembered system info reporting my system as being XP Pro.

Also, I don't know if it makes a difference, but I saw two versions of MCE 2005 on Newegg. The one that's the same version as my system has been dubbed 'obsolete'.

Open up folder options, go to the View tab, and scroll all the way down. If the very last item is "disable simple file sharing" yours is based on Pro.

The MCE system has an option for "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". I checked my pro system and the options were identical.

Is this sufficient proof that there are versions of MCE 2005 that are based off of XP Pro?
