Startup programs in 2000

Doing some work on a friends computer and what a mess. He wants to upgrade to XP, but this machine is so old, it has hair growing out of the drives. It's like a x486 with 128 megs of RAM with a 30 gig HDD. Anyway, I told him his best avenue would be to just build or buy new. Out of the question for him. So, I've cleaned and defragged the hard drive. When I tried to adjust the programs that start with windows, it says it doesn't recognize "msconfig". Is there another command for 2000 to adjust at startup?

ccleaner is also a good piece of software. It will allow you to select what you would and wouldn't like to run on system startup.

Along with this it also offers a very decent cleanup wizard and fixes registry problems, both of which would do the system some good.

or open regedit and navigate down to HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version

look in the run\runonce\runonceex folders for programs that have a regisry key in there, and delete the unnecessary ones.

Thanks for the replies. I got it. It's still slow, but nowhere near as bad as before.

well if those are some accurate specs on this pc i can see why its so slow, might want to recommend either building or buying a new pc. you can definitely get a decent pc for around $400-$500. i cant imagine he does much on that pc besides browse the net, email, and basic use of applications, definitely NO GAMING on his current machine, at least i hope not, unless its solitaire, or checkers..........
