HP Laptop problems

HI

I have a HP Pavillion DV5000 series laptop with media centre on it

It has been fine for about 2 months

Yesterday it booted up but a lot of programmes were missing and my pictures were not where they should have been so some weird stuff happening I had removed the battery to see if I could buy a better one did not think that would do it

Anyway found the files on the hard drive and got it all back and running again

This morning booted up same thing again I have done a system restore back to the weekend when I know all was ok, I have also run spy bot adaware and Norton all give the laptop a clean bill of health

Any ideas a to the problem here?

Ok more info

Laptop boots up but anything to do with the desktop if you try to click on anything the laptop just freezes and all my photos have gone just not there

My daughter tells me she downloaded a picture from my space and put on the desktop as wallpaper and seems to coincide with this but Norton or anything else did not pick up a virus or anything

The picture has gone along with all my pictures cannot even right click on start to access the explorer I am thinking of doing a reset to when it was new but do not want to lose everything
