Thumbs down Hardware problem - monitor does not respond.

Hello!

A client called me stating that she is having a problem with her HP Pavilion PC Model XE736 which is running WIN98. A few days before the monitor stopped responding she told me that monitor was acting weird. I suggested that it she checked her monitor by attaching her computer to another monitor and/or check the state of the driver via Device Manager.

I am sure that port attached to the motherboard for the monitor is shot. I have the computer at my location, connected her computer to one of my monitors (I know it works) and I get the same response, nothing.

I don't have the tools to fully test the motherboard to see if my theory is correct. BUT this computer has been running for at least ten years + something has to give out sooner or later!

Time to sell her a new computer. Parts will cost more than the thing is worth if it's 10 years old.

Wow, Windows 98

I'm sure you can find a PCI card for a very low price, and install it, effectively bypassing the on-board video... Just a thought, since it would be cheaper than replacing the motherboard.

It can't be 10 years old.

That's a standard i810 micro ATX board (Trigem Cognac). It uses a standard SFX form factor power supply. Troubleshooting this thing can be done with traditional parts and techniques and would be worth it, that's a 600 MHz Celeron in there.

Thanks Kareeser for the info!

That is a great work around! I was hoping that I could get her off of that piece of crap which would force her to get a new computer! Oh well... I told her that MS is not supporting that version of the operating system anymore but that does not appear to bother her!

Cheers!

Right before I sent in my query I found that data/link above! Thank you GLC for verifying my search!

Cheers!

A PCI video card may or may not take care of the problem. You are right about it being a piece of crap - that's the same motherboard that eMachines was using back then - when they were REALLY crappy machines. It's probably got something like a 90 watt micro ATX power supply in it.

LOL!

glc, I found an old PCI video card. I am sure that it works. Its even in a anti-static bag! I never throw anything away well unless it is truly dead. I will let you guys know the outcome! If you don't hear from me by Monday assume that my fingers were burned after turning on this dinosaur! Thats what I deserve for attempting to breath life in something that is dead!
