Win xp pro or home edition?

I just saw win xp home edition on sale for about $50.00. The pro version is about $200.00. Is it really worth the extra $$ for the pro version? I am mostly going to do gaming and internet stuff with my new build that is in the works. Thanks

are you going to be doing a lot of advanced things like advanced networking, because if yes, then go pro, but $50 on the other hand is good value for an OS, so, i would say if you absolutely need all the advanced features, get pro, but $150 would be best put towards someting else.

Pro is usually less then $200 (it's on sale at Newegg for $135 today), but I'm curious where you're finding Home for $50?

I have gotten XP Home (upgrade) for $50 at CompUsa with instant rebate. Most of the big box stores will have XP Home upgrade on sale for $50-$60 at any particular time.

The only CompUSA around here is an hour's drive for me... so that doesn't make it cost effective -- For $50, I think I'd do a dual boot for my old Win 98.2 box out in the work shed! I'll keep my eyes open.

I saw the home edition at Comp USA. I might have been confused and it might have been an upgrade for a previously installed version of windows. Is there any disadvantage of getting the upgrade version and installing win 98 onto my new system and then using the upgrade disk? I just wanted to have a nice clean install when I fire up my new system. Thanks

To answer the original question, there is little difference between XP Pro and XP Home, especially if SP 2 is installed. Most of the extras are networking and administrative-related.

Home is getting cheaper and cheaper as the release of Vista comes nearer. $50 for XP home is a good deal.

You do not have to INSTALL 98 to use the upgrade. You can do a clean install and just put the 98 CD in the drive when it does the compliance check.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but isn't there also a difference about how they handle multiple (physical) processors?

Yes, Home does not support multiple physical processors - true dualies. It does support dual core and hyperthreading though.
