Keep Aol from running in background
Hello all. I am trying to keep aol from running in the background at startup. I went to Services in winxp home and put aol connection to manual but once the aol program is opened it reverts back to automatic setting. Another problem is I see win messenger in processes but I'm sure I disabled it. I can't find it in add/remove nor Services. ~ Thanks

I have no experience of AOL but I'm told that the AOL "application" is always running as long as you are connected to their service. I don't know if this is still the situation but the last I heard that was the way it worked.
As for Windows Messenger, it is built into the OS so you can't really disable it. There are some scripts that can be downloaded however that can remove it!

Thanks tomkear I've noticed my computer has been a little sluggish lately and feel it is aol slowing things down a bit. I have ran several checks searching for spyware, viruses, etc. computer is clean. ~ Thanks

thanks for the command Statica, just ran it. I am not trying to stop aol aim, I'm trying to stop aols program itself from running even though it may not be opened yet (can see it in the processes)

I don't think you CAN completely stop AOL from running in the background and still be able to use the service when you need to. If all you need it for is e-mail, uninstall the AOL software and just use the Web to get your mail. This assumes you have a different service you are using for your actual Internet connection.

OK guys, It's ben a couple of days now and I'm not sure if it was Win Messenger being deleted or a couple of the auto startup Aol connections from starting but I do see a improvement to my speed. I'm down to one instance of Aol connectivity being displayed in the task manager. I can live with that
. ~ Thanks
