Angry Xp home won't boot restarts

I have Xp home that has worked for appx. 2 years until recently. Pc starts up and displays screen that windows did not finish loading and you get a menu of choices. Both on safe mode and on start windows normally it will display the the xp boot screen and then it just reboots. While trying to fix this problem the power supply died and I replaced it. I have all sp2 installed, 512 ram kingston, 80 gb maxtor HD, 256 agp nvidia video card, dvd burner and dvd drive. I have tried reinstalling xp from the cd but get a blue screen page fault in a nonpaged area. I tried booting from cd to maxtor max blast but it bombs out when I try to access the HD. I have replaced the ram but this did not correct the problem. I hope this is not too much info. Bad HD?

clear the cmos....

the page fault could be a loose or bad cable (IDE) I would check that...hit the bios and make sure it's configured correctly....

Test the hard drive with Powermax. It's a free download from Maxtor.

Cannot test with powermax as it crashes when trying to run.
The hd is configured correctly. Checked cables and they are not loose. I am hearing a clicking noise from the hd when it boots. I have an asus a7v8x-x motherboard installed. I could not find out how to clear the cmos for this board in the manual.

Sounds like a bad drive.

If you cannot find a clear cmos jumper, remove the battery for an hour.

I was having problems running max blast software not powemax. I have talked with maxtor about drive and it is out of warranty. I have downloaded and ran today powermax and it does not even recognize the drive. Maxtor says yup drive's bad. I am getting a new drive today and will have fun reinstalling this weekend. I hope this clears up my problem.

I purchased a 120 gb seagate drive today. I tried running windows setup but it crashed BSOD and got a stop 0x0000007e error message. I guess I will try to call Microsoft using one of my free calls.

That error is usually defective system ram. Test it.

I have tried both Hard drives in an external enclosure on another pc and they both work fine. I think I am going to contact asus about the motherboard. I also have another stick of ram coming from kingston.

I also tried a different video card and pc still reboots at the windows logo screen. I took out "bad" ram and put it in a different pc and it worked fine in another pc. I then put "bad" ram in bad computer in the 3rd ram slot and it still just reboots. I tried unplugging both dvd and cdrw drives and rebooted pc bu it just rebooted again at the windows logo screen. Bad motherboard????
