HP Laptop Performance Issue

Hi all

I'm in a bit of a muddle. My girlfriend has just recently brought a HP laptop (in the last couple of months) and all of a sudden the performance has really slowed down I swear it takes about 5 minutes to actually get into Windows. One thing I have noticed is that the HDD light is on pretty much constantly (the only thing I can presume that is causing that is the Page File however I'm not sure).

The spec of the laptop is as follows:

AMD Sempron 3100+
512Mb RAM
60Gb Hard Drive
Wireless
Windows XP Pro with SP2

Not a great deal has been installed other than the standard Microsoft stuff such as Office etc. Lego II and FileMaker Pro Advanced have been installed along with a Logitech Webcam. ITunes and Skype have also been installed as well. Oh and Norton Antivirus 2006 is up and running.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I hope i've included enough info there apologies if i
haven't.

Many thanks

Norton AV will slow it down. I use AVG,it's free and does a great job.

I'm not 100% sure it is Norton (although I know it does take a while to load up but even the loading screen for Windows takes ages to clear) as we have had the software on for over a month and this performance business has only occurred in the last day or two.

Have you thoroughly scanned for malware? Have you checked the hard drive for errors using chkdsk?

I have run the Microsoft Remove Malicious Software program and it came back with nothing. CHKDSK has been run as well and nothing came back with that. Norton too showed up clean.

One thing that I have noticed that there are at least 6 svchost.exe in the process list running. a few of them System process's, a couple Network Processes and one a Local. I have stopped the local on and the CPU usage seems to have been cut right down as it was constantly running between 80 and 100% (which could well have been the initial problem).

What are the svchost.exe files and why do so many get loaded up and could they be a problem??
