XP home key code
I'm helping out a friend who was given a used computer with a fried hard drive. He replaced it and needs to reload windows. It has a genuine windows oem COA for windows XP home ed. on the case. The original cd from hp he was told is lost but was given a burned copy of xp home ed.
The problem is that when trying to load windows it will not accept the key code from the case. I only have a xp pro disk so I am of no help. He is not trying to do anything illegal nor am I soliciting for help that is unlawful. What are his legal options that he could persue without having to pay for a new key? Is it as simple as finding someone who has an original xp home disc that he can borrow that will accept the key that he already has? Thanks.

He can probably buy a new restore CD from HP, check their parts store, look it up by model. The key is only going to work with a HP restore CD.

Not exactly true....
Another CD key from the same VERSION of windows should work, if you have access to one. -Kev

Not necessarily the name brand OEM keys.

Load it with the key code assigned to that XP Home disk but don't activate it. Then use the Magical Jelly Bean to change the code to the one on the case prior to activation. Should be perfectly legit and I know from personal experience that it works.

sometimes Magic jelly bean wont work....In that case use the MS key changer...
If Magic jellybean does not work...just search for the Microsoft Key changer...

MJB came out with a bugfix for that in August. Download the new one.

I still have to differ with that GLC (about the OEM Brand name keys). I have had OEM versions that will activate using a key that is not from the same name brand, but is the same XP version.
Yeah, I've read all the stuff about what is supposed to work and what isn't, but it doesn't always follow. -Kev |

And I have had some that won't. That's why I said "not necessarily". I was also referring to the key being accepted during installation, not activation. Activation is never a problem once you get it installed - you just call M$ if you have to and plead your case.
