Boot Problem - XP

I built my boy a PC about 4 years ago, an AMD as I remember. Somewhere I still may have the specs. Anyway, he's since had XP on it for a good while. The thing won't boot, period. It gets to the Windows splashscreen, stops then tries again by itself. I had him try it in Safe Mode - same thing. I had him to try the "last known configuration" thing - no good, same thing. He did say at the time the splashscreen starts and the CD-rom starts it's thing is when it fails - maybe a relation?? He wants to bring it to me to check out. Can the CD-rom cause this problem or at least be a suspect? I know I can unplug the PS and mobo ribbon to isolate it and try booting, but failing this, any other ideas? If I remember I put 2 sticks of RAM in it when built, so can play with that as well. Other than that, any pointers?

try booting to the xp cd and use recovery console to disable the cd rom and see if that allows you to boot normally? has he updated any device drivers recently? if so use recovery console to disable them as well. if that fails try a windows repair by booting to the xp cd

Since you have two sticks of RAM in there I would start there since it's an easy, less than 10 minute, test. Bad RAM can cause all sorts of weird problems. The last stick that went bad on me caused a similar problem w/ the added effect that it decided to kill my display drivers on the few occasions it would boot all the way in before rebooting itself.

Ram can be easily tested with memtest86+.

www.memtest.org

You should test the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics.

Try www.ewido.net, this website has online scanning service that scans not only your Hard Disk ,but also cookies, registry and memory.

Glc, what does it indicate when a computer doesnot even boot at safe mode?

Did he use internet service on that computer? It might have been effected by a virus or a malware especially the 1 that was released recently.

Was his computer slowing down during loading, before this trouble appeared?

That the problem isn't device driver related or caused by a program running in background. It's either hardware related or there are corrupt or damaged system files.

That sight is a bit confusing. Of course I want the latest update but there are several files under that and not sure which one I need.

Memtest86+ V1.65 (10/01/2005) Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) - that one and you will need to burn the ISO to a CD.

Or you can get the precompiled package for floppy and make a boot floppy with it.

What I want is something to put on a floppy/CD, that I can test the RAM with; i.e., the machine won't boot at all, etc. A good tool for the toolbox.

download, extract and burn the iso image on a pc that is working

you unzip the iso file for memtest86, and then use 3rd party burning software to burn the iso image to a disc, then take the disc place it into the busted pc cd-rom, and boot to the cd.

you dont need a working pc to run memtest, just have to boot to the memtest disc.

If you want a good tool for the toolbox, just download and make the Ultimate Boot CD. It has memtest86+ and a ton of other utilities on it.
