Clueless

OK, I guess this would be a simple problem for someone here, but I don't have a clue how to do it.
When I was running Win98, I could use Xcopy32.exe in DOS to transfer my system to a bigger HD whenever I needed more space.
But how do you do it in Win XP? There's no DOS, right?
Or can I use cmd for this? I don't have Partition Magic.

You can just go ahead and do an xcopy in CMD. Type xcopy/? at the prompt to see all available switches and parameters.

For a free partition manager, you could always try gparted

You cannot use xcopy in XP to clone a whole drive, system and all. The free way to do this is with the setup software from the hard drive manufacturer - WD (DLG Tools), Seagate (Disk Wizard), and Maxtor (Maxblast) all offer it, look for the copy drive function. It runs from a boot floppy or boot CD. If you have a different brand drive, you need a 3rd party solution such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.

I dont know about the others but Maxblast will do it with different manufacturers drives as long as 1 of them is a MAxtor/Quantum.

Using Maxblast I was able to clone my system from a Quantum to a Western Digital HD.
But when I tried to boot it, it would not start and I got a message "Missing OS".
However I was able to boot up using a Win XP bootdisk.
What does this mean? Are NtDetect and Ntldr corrupted? Or is this a problem with the MBR?

Try doing a repair install from the XP cd.. If windows don't find the OS then your probably looking at a complete reinstall..

You could try recloning using WD's DLG Tools.

Running Fixboot in Console Panel solved the bootup problem. I now have a fully functioning Win XP in my brand new HD.
Thanks for the help and advice.
