XP Home (OEM) alright?

I recently had an OS failure on my laptop (XP Home). The laptop was given to me without any discs. I have files on the original HDD that are still able to be rescued. I also have a spare blank HDD to put in the laptop to install a new OS. I have the USB to IDE adapter to plug in the old HDD to rescue files.

I'm just wondering if the OEM version will work okay as I've read about some hardware and software issues. I'm just looking for the cheapest fix here; I still want to use the laptop for school and I'lll probably buy a new one next year.

Thanks for any replies!

OEM will work fine...

you will need to locate drivers for everything else...

the drivers are intergrated into the preloaded install.....best bet...order the disk from the maker...or try and download the drivers from the vendor site....

does that mean I'll need drivers for every piece of hardware in the laptop? Does plug&play still work like the old OS or will I need to track down drivers for every jump drive I have?

Plug and Play will still work fine. What kind of laptop is it, and how old is it? Many manufacturers provide tons of downloadable drivers, and if the laptop is older (~2003 or 2004 vintage) the drivers may be built into XP Service Pack 2 anyway.

The main ones you might need are chipset, video, sound, and network. You might also want to get stuff like a touchpad driver. Toshiba should have them all on their website -- they're pretty good about that stuff.

update: Well my plan failed and will cost a hundred more dollars.
I found out what the "upgrade" means concerning windows XP.

I planned on installing this on a blank (formatted) spare HDD then attaching the old HDD by USB to get the files off. This did not work as there was no trace of a previous version of Windows.

I think to make my plan work, I have to buy the "retail" version, correct? Plus I can re-install on a future build.

You can use the upgrade CD for a clean install as long as you have or can borrow a Win98 or WinME CD. When it does the compliance check, just swap CD's and point it to the CD drive - it will think for a minute and move on, then swap CD's back.

If you have an OEM XP CD, it does NOT require a previous version - you must have an upgrade version instead, which is approximately the same price.

It was the upgrade version it turns out...I didn't know there was a difference. So the OEM version will install to a blank HDD?

I plan on building more computers; is the 'retail' version a better idea in the long run? I don't want to have to call Microsoft everytime I change hardware.

OEM will work. With the retail version, your paying for the fancy box and support from Microsoft. Not worth the extra cost.
