Can't see flash drives after mobo replacement and repair install

I just changed my mobo (I have to update mysig BTW) and did a repair install (win xp pro sp2) and I installed all the drivers of the new mobo and video card. Everything's working fine except that I'm not able to see any of my USB flash memory devices when I plug them. The system detects them and runs the usual "new hardware detected" protocol but then I can't see them on my PC. All of the other USB devices are working fine as are all of the USB ports. But I haven't been able to solve this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you install the mobo drivers yet?

The repair install will have wiped out all your Windows updates and there are USB support drivers within SP2 updates.

I've already installed the mobo drivers as well as all of the windows updates but I still get the same problem. Perhaps I should stop being lazy and install everything from scratch all over again?

The old mobo was an MSI KT3 ultra ARU (with 4 USB 1.1 ports and 4 2.0 USB ports and VIA chip). The new one is an ASUS A8N5X with 10 USB 2.0 ports and nVidia chip.

You need to go through that thing and uninstall any VIA stuff left over. Check add/remove programs for anything that's not still there. If you changed video cards, do a Driver Cleaner Pro run to make sure the old video drivers are gone.

Have you got any network drives on your system?. USB drives can get hidden behind network drives. Go into disk management and see if you can see the drives. If you can just change the drive letters.

Cleaned up the VIA drivers to no avail.

Where can I go to disk management?

Also, whenever I open my PC or the control panel I get, for a fraction of a second, the "microsoft installer is preparing to install" message.

Something tells me a format in is in my future

Thanks for the help. I decided to re-install everything all over again as I was having some other problems.

Everything's working fine now.
