Oh no! Where is my CD ROM drive?!
Ok so I bought an IBM Thinkpad 600x on eBay for $95. I guess the previous owner upgraded Windows from 98 to 2000 but used Dell's version (not sure if that matters or not). Now Windows does not detect my modem or CD ROM drive which obviously creates quite a few problems. However the BIOS does detect the CD ROM drive.
My question is how can I format the drive or override Windows and delete it so I can install a versioin of Windows with my drivers on it? Obviously this must be does without the use of other programs because I cannot transfer files onto my laptop. Thanks! |

What version of Windows do you have the CD for and wish to install?

I have a CD for XP. I thought it would be fine if I ran graphics on minimum.

Just boot with the XP CD, go into Setup, and remove all partitions. Then set up XP in the unallocated space (the whole drive should show as unallocated) and it will give you the option to create a new partition and format it.
What's the processor speed, amount of ram, and hard drive size? All drivers you may need are available at the Lenovo site for all operating systems - you may be able to get that install of 2000 working fine. You may want to update the bios, if it's an old bios it may not get along well with newer versions of Windows. Last edited by glc; 10-21-2006 at 12:07 PM. |

That's the problem. My CD ROM drive is not detected so I cannot boot from the CD. I need to get 2000 off first.

if your cd-rom is detected in the bios then it is working
update the bios as G stated. have you tried changing the boot order in the bios? you could pull the hard drive, and put it into another system and remove all partitions that way then throw it back into the laptop, but you need an HD adapter for the laptop drive to an ide cable in order to do this.
