Some problems during upgrade

I wanted to know about the problems that usually take place during the upgrade process especially from Win98 to Win2000 and Win98 to WinXP.

Their is no such general problem during upgrade from Win98 to WinXP but it happens that after upgrading the Computer from Win98 to Win2000 , some or any 1 of the hardware device doesnot work properly and is not detected by the Computer.

I wanted to know that can this problem happen because the driver database of Win2000 doesnot necessarily contain drivers for the devices or hardwares running perfectly on win98?

What I think it cannot be an issue of datacable since the same datacable is being used even after the upgrade.

Hardware Compatibility List
The Windows 2000 Professional Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) is a list of hardware devices that have successfully passed the Hardware Compatibility Tests (HCT). Installing Windows 2000 on a computer that has hardware that is not listed in the HCL might cause the installation to fail.

You should chek and manualy update drivers for some hardware if they are not functioning properly!!!

This is just general information...if a computer with Win98, Win98SE or WinME isn't running smooth and stable, you don't want to upgrade to WinXP as you'll just carry over the instability from Win98 to WinXP. It's best to wipe Win98 off the HDD (after you've backed up all your important data) and then do a clean install of WinXP.

If you upgrade from within Windows, before the upgrade actually starts, it will present you with a report of what hardware and software is not compatible. You need to read the report and prepare appropriate drivers and follow the other recommendations given. You can quit the upgrade at this time with no issues to prepare properly (like uninstall software) - then you can start over.
